Tucuxi

The tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) is a small dolphin found only in fresh water, living throughout much of the Amazon River and its tributaries across Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and southeastern Colombia. Although it shares its river habitat with the true river dolphin known as the boto, it belongs instead to the oceanic dolphin family Delphinidae. It grows to about 1.5 meters in length, smaller than a bottlenose dolphin, with a light to bluish gray back and sides, an often pinkish underside, a moderately long beak and 26 to 36 pairs of teeth in each jaw. It hunts schooling fish, with about thirty known prey species, chasing them in rapid dashes just below the surface, and is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and included in CITES Appendix I.
