Western Grey Gibbon

The western grey gibbon, scientifically Hylobates abbotti, is a primate of the gibbon family named after zoologist William Louis Abbott, endemic to the western portion of Borneo in both Kalimantan and Sarawak, found north of the Kapuas River and ranging as far east as Spaoh. It was formerly grouped with the northern grey gibbon and southern grey gibbon as a single species, but more recent studies indicate all three are distinct. It is classified as Endangered under IUCN criteria and listed on CITES Appendix I, threatened by heavy deforestation in Borneo, forest fires worsened by El Nino events, and illegal hunting and capture for the pet trade.
