White-beaked dolphin

The white-beaked dolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) is a robust oceanic dolphin found only in cold temperate and subarctic waters of the North Atlantic, generally in seas less than 1,000 meters deep from Cape Cod and Greenland east to Svalbard, and commonly seen around Iceland and off Britain and Norway. Adults measure 2.3 to 3.1 meters in length and weigh 180 to 354 kilograms, with a dark gray back and flanks, lighter patches and a pale saddle behind the dorsal fin, a light gray to nearly white underside, and a white beak that can darken to ashy gray with age; it carries up to 92 vertebrae, more than any other oceanic dolphin. It feeds mainly on gadoid fish, particularly cod, haddock and whiting.
