Home›Mammals›Carnivorans›Cats›All CatsBrowse ByAll CatsThis group gathers Carnivorans that belong to the cat family, Felidae, the most strictly carnivorous branch of the order, recognized by a short rounded skull, retractable claws in nearly every species and a hunting style built around stalking and a short, powerful pursuit rather than sustained endurance chasing. It spans the big cats such as the lion, tiger, jaguar and leopard, the mid-sized cats such as the cheetah, cougar, lynx and clouded leopard, and dozens of small wild cats found on every inhabited continent, alongside the domestic cat and its feral populations. Their shared anatomy and hunting style set them apart from the dog family's endurance pursuit predators and from the bear family's largely solitary omnivores.FactsAll CatsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested6 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedViviparous (Live-Bearing) 2All CatsFilter Results46 entriesCommon GroupAllCarnivorans (46)Cats (46)Everyday GroupAllCats (46)HabitatAllAlpine (1)Boreal Forest (3)Chaparral (1)Cloud Forest (1)Desert (7)Freshwater Swamp Forest (2)Grassland (8)Mangrove Forest (3)Montane Grasslands and Shrublands (1)Savanna (3)Steppe (1)Temperate Forest (6)Temperate Rainforest (1)Tropical Rainforest (13)Tundra (2)Wetlands (4)Xeric Shrubland (2)Where It LivesAllAfrica (13)Antigua and Barbuda (1)Argentina (7)Asia (2)Australia (2)Bahamas (1)Bahrain (1)Barbados (1)Belgium (4)Belize (4)Bolivia (6)Botswana (8)Brazil (7)Cabo Verde (1)Canada (2)Chile (3)China (1)Colombia (10)Costa Rica (6)Cuba (1)Cyprus (2)Denmark (1)Djibouti (1)Dominica (1)Dominican Republic (1)Ecuador (10)Egypt (1)El Salvador (3)Eswatini (7)Ethiopia (1)France (1)Guatemala (4)Guyana (5)Honduras (4)Iran (1)Israel (1)Kazakhstan (7)Kenya (3)Kyrgyzstan (3)Lesotho (5)Madagascar (1)Mexico (8)Mozambique (7)Namibia (8)Nicaragua (4)North America (10)Norway (1)Panama (4)Paraguay (4)Peru (6)Philippines (1)Portugal (1)Russia (3)Saudi Arabia (1)South Africa (2)South America (11)South Asia (25)Spain (2)Suriname (5)Sweden (1)Taiwan (3)Tajikistan (5)Tanzania (1)The Andes (1)Trinidad and Tobago (1)Turkmenistan (7)Ukraine (2)United Arab Emirates (1)United States (5)Uruguay (4)Uzbekistan (5)Venezuela (6)Zimbabwe (7)Conservation StatusAllCritically Endangered (2)Endangered (5)Least Concern (15)Near Threatened (6)Not Evaluated (1)Vulnerable (15)DietAllCarnivore (44)Detritivore or Scavenger (1)Frugivore (1)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (1)Terrestrial (46)Terrestrial and Freshwater (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (46)Population TrendAllDecreasing (1)ThreatsAllAgriculture and Aquaculture (1)Biological Resource Use (8)Invasive and Other Problematic Species, Genes and Diseases (1)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (4)Disease Vector (1)Domesticated (3)Ecotourism and Research (1)Hunted or Fished (26)Invasive or Introduced Species (1)Kept as Pets (8)Natural Pest Control (1)No Significant Interaction with Humans (1)Used in Traditional Medicine (2)CITES AppendixAllAppendix I (27)Appendix II (20)Not Listed (4)NatureServe RankAllG4 Apparently Secure (3)G5 Secure (4)GNA Not Applicable (2)EcosystemAllAmazon Rainforest (3)Arabian Desert (1)Atlantic Forest (2)Borneo Rainforest (3)Canadian Boreal Forest (1)Caspian Sea (2)Cerrado (2)Doñana (1)Eastern Himalayas (2)Eurasian Steppe (1)Everglades (1)Kalahari Desert (1)Karakum Desert (1)Kruger National Park (3)Lake Baikal (1)Llanos (3)Moorland (2)Okavango Delta (1)Pampas (1)Pantanal (2)Sahara Desert (1)Scandinavian Taiga (1)Serengeti (4)Siberian Taiga (1)Sumatran Lowland Rainforest (2)Sundarbans (3)Thar Desert (1)Valdivian Temperate Rainforest (1)Western Ghats (4)Yasuní (1)Yellowstone (2)TaxonomyAllCaracal (1)Catopuma (1)Felidae (5)Felis (8)Herpailurus (1)Leopardus (7)Lynx (4)Neofelis (1)Panthera (9)Pardofelis (2)Prionailurus (5)Procyonidae (1)Puma (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 46African Golden CatMammalsAfrican LionMammalsAfrican WildcatMammalsAmur LeopardMammalsAndean Mountain CatMammalsAsian Golden CatMammalsBay CatMammalsBengal TigerMammalsBlack-footed CatMammalsBobcatMammalsCanada LynxMammalsCaracalMammalsCheetahMammalsChinese Mountain CatMammalsClouded LeopardMammalsCougarMammalsDomestic CatMammalsEurasian LynxMammalsEuropean WildcatMammalsFeral CatMammalsFishing CatMammalsFlat-headed CatMammalsGeoffroy's CatMammalsIberian LynxMammalsJaguarMammalsJaguarundiMammalsJungle CatMammalsKodkodMammalsLeopardMammalsLeopard CatMammalsLionMammalsMarbled CatMammalsMargayMammalsOcelotMammalsOncillaMammalsPallas's Cat (Otocolobus manul)MammalsPampas CatMammalsRing-tailed CatMammalsRusty-spotted CatMammalsSand CatMammalsServalMammalsSnow LeopardMammalsSumatran TigerMammalsSunda Clouded LeopardMammalsSunda Leopard CatMammalsTigerMammalsSources1.
