Stripe-faced dunnart

The stripe-faced dunnart, scientific name Sminthopsis macroura and first described by John Gould in 1845, is a small nocturnal marsupial in the carnivorous marsupial family Dasyuridae, sometimes called a marsupial mouse. It occupies a broad range of arid and semi-arid central and northern Australia, from the Pilbara to the central Northern Territory, western and central Queensland, and south into north-east South Australia and north and west New South Wales. It measures about 155 to 198 millimeters from snout to tail tip and weighs 15 to 25 grams, identified by pale grey-brown upperparts, a dark stripe running from the muzzle across the forehead to between the ears, white underparts and feet, and a swollen tail that tapers with extended hairs near the tip. Recent genetic research suggests the taxon may represent three distinct species, though it is still treated as one because they are difficult to tell apart.
