Malvaceae is the mallow family of flowering plants, comprising several thousand species across roughly 200 genera, distributed nearly worldwide with the greatest diversity in the tropics. The family includes the genus Theobroma, source of cacao, as well as cotton, hibiscus and okra, and is characterized by alternate leaves and flowers typically with five petals and numerous stamens fused into a tube.
