The order contains roughly 70 to 90 species across about 11 genera, with the exact count complicated by difficulty distinguishing species within the genus Nymphaea. Its members are rhizomatous aquatic herbs with broad leaf bases and large showy flowers, and they lack the vascular cambium that produces wood in other plants.
