Toxocara canis is a helminth parasite found worldwide that primarily infects dogs and other canids, though it can also infect other animals, including humans. Its name derives from the Greek toxon, meaning bow or quiver, and the Latin caro, meaning flesh. The parasite lives in the small intestine of its definitive host and is common in puppies, where an untreated infection can be fatal, causing diarrhea, vomiting, pneumonia, an enlarged abdomen, flatulence, and poor growth. Infection in adult dogs is usually asymptomatic but may cause diarrhea.
