African openbill

The African openbill is a species of stork in the family Ciconiidae, widely distributed across Sub-Saharan Africa and the western regions of Madagascar. It is common to locally abundant across its range, though its distribution is patchy. Some experts recognize two subspecies, one on the African continent and one on Madagascar, distinguished by the more pronounced ridges on the bill of the Madagascar birds. Its closest relative is the Asian openbill, and both species share the unusually shaped large bill that gives them their name.
