NOAA defines a wetland simply as an area of land that is saturated with water. It groups them into five kinds by where that water comes from: marine wetlands on open coasts, estuarine wetlands where a river meets the tide, riverine wetlands along rivers, lacustrine wetlands fringing lakes, and palustrine wetlands, the marshes, swamps, fens and bogs most people picture first. Unlike the other biomes in this atlas, a wetland is not defined by a temperature band or a rainfall total. It is defined by hydrology, and it turns up from the tropics to the Arctic wherever water lingers on the land. NOAA describes wetlands acting as water filters, absorbing excess nutrients and pollutants before they reach rivers and lakes, and as flood control, absorbing and slowing floodwaters during heavy rain. That combination, filtration plus flood storage, is why a wetland can sit at the edge of a Freshwater biome, a Marine coastline or a Savanna floodplain and still do the same basic job.

NOAA's own definition of a wetland is almost plain to the point of being unhelpful: an area of land that is saturated with water. What that saturation does, once it is sitting there, is the more interesting story. NOAA describes wetlands acting as water filters, absorbing excess nutrients, sediments and other pollutants before they ever reach a river, a lake or the open sea. The same soaked ground works the opposite direction during a storm. Rather than letting a heavy rain run straight off the land, a wetland absorbs and slows the floodwater, which NOAA credits with alleviating property damage and, in the worst events, saving lives. Two jobs, filtration and flood storage, done by the same passive, unpowered structure of soil, roots and standing water. This atlas classifies Wetlands as its own biome rather than folding it into Freshwater, because a wetland is not defined by a climate band the way a rainforest or a desert is. It is defined by hydrology, and NOAA's own classification proves the point: marine wetlands sit on open coasts, estuarine wetlands where a river meets the tide, riverine wetlands beside rivers, lacustrine wetlands fringing lakes, and palustrine wetlands, the marshes, swamps, fens and bogs most people picture first. A wetland can appear inside a tropical rainforest, on an arctic coast or in the middle of a desert wherever water lingers, which is exactly why it needed a category of its own.

Not One Wetland But Five, All Sharing a Name

Ask what a wetland is and most people picture a marsh. NOAA's own classification is wider than that single image. It sorts wetlands into five general types by where the water that saturates them comes from: marine wetlands on the open coast, estuarine wetlands where a river's fresh water meets the tide, riverine wetlands strung along rivers, lacustrine wetlands fringing lakes, and palustrine wetlands, the category that actually holds the marshes, swamps, fens and bogs most people mean when they say the word. Common names pile up across all five: NOAA lists marshes, estuaries, mangroves, mudflats, mires, ponds, fens, swamps, deltas and coral reefs among the terms that end up describing one wetland type or another. That range is worth sitting with, because it means a coral reef and a mountain bog, two ecosystems that share almost nothing about temperature, salinity or the species living in them, both qualify as wetlands under the same hydrological test. What unites the five types is never climate. It is water sitting on or in the land long enough to shape what grows there, which is also why this atlas keeps Wetlands as a biome defined by hydrology rather than by a temperature or rainfall figure the way Tundra or Tropical Rainforest are.
