Asian Tiger Mosquito

Aedes albopictus, also called the Asian tiger mosquito or forest mosquito, is native to the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia and has spread widely over recent centuries through the transport of goods and international travel, recognizable by the white bands on its legs and body that give it its tiger name. Because it associates closely with humans rather than wetlands and bites during the day as well as at dusk and dawn, it has become a significant pest in many communities, and it is an important vector for viral diseases including yellow fever, dengue and chikungunya as well as several filarial worms, with the additional ability to host and potentially transmit the Zika virus.
