Allen's Swamp Monkey

Allen's swamp monkey is a species of Old World monkey endemic to swamps and riparian forests of the central Congo Basin. A medium-sized primate with a head-body length of up to 46 centimetres and a slightly longer tail, it is identifiable by its coarse coat of green, brown, gray and white fur, and it is an arboreal omnivore that forages in trees near water while periodically descending to the ground for invertebrates and plant matter. It lives in diurnal social groups of up to 40 individuals, and though once classed among the guenons it has been the sole member of its own genus, Allenopithecus, since the 1920s, now regarded as a sister lineage to the guenons; it is classed as least concern by the IUCN, though poaching and capture for the exotic pet trade are projected threats.
