The alpine marmot is a large ground-dwelling squirrel found in high numbers across mountainous areas of central and southern Europe, including the Alps, Carpathians, Tatras and Northern Apennines, typically at elevations between 800 and 3,200 metres. It had disappeared from the Pyrenees by the end of the Pleistocene epoch but was successfully reintroduced there in 1948.
