Alpine pika

The alpine pika is a species of small mammal in the pika family, Ochotonidae. Its summer coat varies drastically among subspecies but is generally dark or cinnamon brown, turning grey with a yellowish tinge in winter. It is found in western Mongolia, eastern Kazakhstan, Russia, and China, in very cold mountainous regions, where it forages as a generalist herbivore on mosses, tree branches, pine nuts, and plant stems. It communicates with a long call, a short call, and an alarm call, and is rated Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
