The Altai wapiti, also called the Altai elk, Altai deer or Altai maral, is a subspecies of Cervus canadensis found in the forested hills of southern Siberia, northwestern Mongolia and the northern Xinjiang province of China. Adult males reach a shoulder height of up to 155 centimeters and a weight of up to 300 kilograms, while females are notably smaller, and calves weigh 11 to 22 kilograms at birth. Compared to other wapiti subspecies it is smaller and paler in color, with a lighter toned torso and a darker neck.
