The largest freshwater dolphin species, found only in the Amazon, Orinoco and Madeira river basins of South America. Adults show striking color variation from dark grey in newborns to grey with pink or white flanks in adults, with males generally more pink than females; adult females run 182 to 218cm and males, 16 percent larger, 219 to 249cm. It inhabits rivers, tributaries, channels, confluences, lakes and flooded forest, favoring low-current water near confluences and river banks, and hunts alone or in small pods of three to four using echolocation to find prey in turbid water.

Most dolphins the public pictures are grey, sleek, and creatures of the open ocean. The Amazon river dolphin breaks both assumptions at once. As it matures it can turn pink, sometimes strikingly so, with males typically pinker than females, all bound up with a body built for a different environment entirely: flooded forest, narrow channels and river confluences rather than open water. Its neck vertebrae are not fused, unusual among cetaceans, letting it turn its head in every direction to navigate the tangled, root choked spaces a rigid necked ocean dolphin never has to enter, and it hunts more than fifty prey species there using echolocation, since the rivers it lives in are often too turbid for sight to do much work at all.

It is also among the largest freshwater dolphins on Earth, adult males running 219 to 249cm, about 16 percent longer than adult females, and it lives nowhere but the Amazon, Orinoco and Madeira river basins of South America, mostly alone or in small pods of three or four rather than the larger groups typical of marine dolphins. That restricted range is also what makes it vulnerable: it cannot simply move to another river system if its own becomes degraded or overfished.

The species carries an IUCN status of Endangered, driven by drowning in fishing gillnets and, more specifically, deliberate hunting for use as bait in the piracatinga fishery, a fish that has developed a taste for dolphin flesh as bait and created a direct economic incentive to kill dolphins that did not exist a generation ago. This atlas's own Freshwater biome carried zero species of its own before this entry; the Amazon river dolphin is its first.

A Population Nobody Has Ever Actually Counted

Ask how many Amazon river dolphins are left in the world, and the honest answer is that nobody knows, and this entry does not pretend otherwise. World Land Trust's own species page states plainly that no range-wide estimate of abundance or population trend exists for Inia geoffrensis, which is a genuinely different situation from a species whose population is merely small or merely declining: this one has never been counted across its actual range at all.

What does exist is regional evidence, and it paints a troubling picture even without a global total. A 22 year standardized survey along a fixed transect in Brazil's Mamiraua Reserve, published by Da Silva and colleagues in 2018, documented a sustained, steep decline over that period, with the local boto population falling at an average rate of roughly 6.7 percent a year from 2000 onward. The same region carries an unusual and specific threat: a fishery for piracatinga, a scavenger fish that has developed a taste for dolphin carcasses, which created a direct market incentive to kill dolphins deliberately for bait, estimated at 300 to 4,000 animals a year in that fishery alone.

A rate of decline without a starting total is enough to establish the IUCN's Endangered status, but it is not enough to say how close the species is to some absolute floor, or how the picture differs across the Orinoco and Madeira basins where less survey work has been done. That gap is real, not a matter of insufficient effort to find a number that is out there somewhere; it would take a coordinated, basin wide survey using the same standardized methodology already proven at Mamiraua, extended across the full range and repeated regularly, to close it. This atlas records that gap as an open question rather than filling it with an invented figure, the same discipline already applied to the honey bee's own population.

World Land Trust's own species page states there are no range-wide estimates of abundance or population trends for Inia geoffrensis, only regional survey data; a 22-year standardized count in Brazil's Mamirauá Reserve documents a sustained decline, and Brazilian Amazon surveys separately estimate a 6.7 percent annual population decline, but no basin-wide census across the Amazon, Orinoco and Madeira systems has ever been completed.

What would resolve this A coordinated, standardized survey across the full range (Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and Bolivia) using consistent transect methodology, of the kind already run locally in the Mamirauá Reserve, extended basin-wide and repeated on a regular interval.
