Ganoderma applanatum, commonly known as the artist's conk, is a bracket fungus found on dead and dying hardwood trees across the Northern Hemisphere, a genus relative of this atlas's own reishi, Ganoderma lucidum. It gets its common name from the pale, spore-covered underside of its cap, which browns permanently when scratched or drawn on, a property that has long made it popular with artists for etching detailed images.
