Polyporales is an order of about 1,800 species of fungi in the division Basidiomycota, encompassing the polypores as well as many corticioid fungi and a few agarics. Most members are saprotrophic wood-rotters, and some, in genera such as Ganoderma and Fomes, attack living trees before continuing to decompose the wood of their dead hosts. Molecular research has confirmed Polyporales as a monophyletic group within the class Agaricomycetes, and several of its species are cultivated commercially as food or for use in traditional Chinese medicine.
