Taxodium distichum, commonly called bald cypress, baldcypress or swamp cypress, is a deciduous conifer in the family Cupressaceae, native to the southeastern United States. Hardy and tough, it adapts to a wide range of soil types, whether wet, salty, dry or swampy, is noted for the russet-red autumn colour of its lacy needles, and is both extremely flood tolerant and fairly drought hardy. Bald cypress was designated the official state tree of Louisiana in 1963, and because its heartwood resists rot once the tree matures, it is often used to make fence posts, doors, flooring, caskets and other items.
