The bearded seal, also called the square-flipper seal, is a medium-sized pinniped found in and near the Arctic Ocean. Its genus name derives from Greek words referring to its heavy jaw, while its species name refers to its most distinctive feature, a dense set of long whiskers that curl elegantly once dry.
