Blunt-leaved Bog-moss

Blunt-leaved bog-moss, Sphagnum palustre, also called prairie sphagnum, is a species of peat moss found in wet forests and marshes across much of the temperate world, generally favoring damp woodland over the open moorland many of its relatives prefer. Like other Sphagnum species it can absorb many times its own dry weight in water within its spongy, spirally structured leaf cells, a property that historically made peat mosses valuable as wound dressings and that remains central to their role in building and preserving peatland habitats.
