The Brazil nut is a South American tree of the monotypic genus Bertholletia, in the family Lecythidaceae, and also the name of its commercially harvested edible seeds. It is among the largest and longest lived trees of the Amazon rainforest. Its fruit and nutshell are large, together weighing as much as 2 kilograms, and enclose the edible nut. Brazil nuts are valued as food for their diverse micronutrient content, particularly a high level of selenium. The tree's wood is also prized for carpentry, flooring and heavy construction.
