Ceratium is a genus of large, armored marine and freshwater dinoflagellates recognizable by their distinctive shape, a body drawn out into several long, horn-like projections that give many species a bristling, angular silhouette. Found in oceans and lakes worldwide as a common component of plankton communities, species in the genus photosynthesize using chlorophyll-containing plastids while also supplementing their diet by capturing small prey, a mixed feeding strategy shared by many dinoflagellates.
