Dinophyceae is a class of dinoflagellates, the single celled eukaryotes, usually classified as protists, that make up the phylum Dinoflagellata. Dinoflagellates are mostly marine plankton, though they are also common in freshwater habitats, and their populations vary with sea surface temperature, salinity and depth. Many are photosynthetic, and a large fraction of these are mixotrophic, combining photosynthesis with the ingestion of prey.
