Pfiesteria piscicida is a dinoflagellate species that inhabits estuaries and was linked by researchers to a series of harmful algal blooms and fish kills along the coasts of North Carolina and Maryland during the 1980s and 1990s. Its scientific name translates to fish-killer, and it earned the nickname the cell from hell in North Carolina news coverage of the era because of the toxic effects associated with its blooms.
