Noctiluca is a genus of dinoflagellates in the family Noctilucaceae whose only species is Noctiluca scintillans, a marine organism that can exist in a green or red form depending on the pigmentation of its vacuoles. It is found worldwide and is well known for producing bioluminescence, a vivid blue glow in nighttime waters, though massive blooms of the organism can also trigger harmful red tides and are considered an indicator of human-caused eutrophication.
