Chamois

The chamois, also called the Alpine chamois, is a species of goat-antelope native to mountainous parts of Europe and western Asia. Its range runs from the Pyrenees and Cantabrian Mountains through the Alps, Apennines, Dinarides, Tatra and Carpathian Mountains to the Balkan Mountains, the Rila-Rhodope massif, Pindus, the mountains of northeastern Turkey and the Caucasus. It has also been introduced to the South Island of New Zealand. Some chamois subspecies are strictly protected in the European Union under the European Habitats Directive.
