Chlamydomonas is a genus of green algae comprising about 150 species of unicellular flagellates found in stagnant water, damp soil, freshwater, seawater and even snow, where some species are known as snow algae. It is widely used as a model organism in molecular biology, particularly for studying flagellar motility and chloroplast dynamics, and it is notable for possessing light-activated ion channels called channelrhodopsins.
