Chlorophyceae

Chlorophyceae, also known as chlorophycean algae, is a class of green algae within the phylum Chlorophyta. It is a large assemblage of mostly freshwater and terrestrial organisms, many of which are important primary producers in the ecosystems they inhabit. Body plans within the class are diverse, ranging from single flagellated or non flagellated cells to colonies or filaments of cells. The class has traditionally been distinguished on the basis of ultrastructural morphology, with molecular traits increasingly used to classify its taxa as well.
