Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a single-celled green alga about 10 micrometers in diameter that swims using two flagella, classified in the family Chlamydomonadaceae. It has a cell wall of hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins, a large cup-shaped chloroplast, a prominent pyrenoid, and a light-sensitive eyespot, and is widely distributed in soil and fresh water worldwide as one of the most common Chlamydomonas species. It is an especially well-studied model organism for its ease of culturing and genetic manipulation, and it draws commercial interest for biopharmaceutical production, biofuel development, and hydrogen research; it can grow photoautotrophically in light or heterotrophically on organic carbon in darkness.
