Chlorella is a genus of about thirteen species of single-celled green algae, found as spherical or slightly ellipsoidal cells measuring 2 to 10 micrometers in diameter, each with a single chloroplast and no flagella. It multiplies rapidly given carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and minimal minerals, with a photosynthetic efficiency of about 8 percent that exceeds many conventional crops, and it has been used in Nobel Prize-winning research by Otto Heinrich Warburg and Melvin Calvin.
