The green algae: a large, mostly aquatic phylum of photosynthetic protists that share their green chlorophyll pigments and much of their cellular biochemistry with land plants, from which they are thought to descend. Chlorophyta ranges from single floating cells to large multicellular seaweeds such as sea lettuce.
