Ostreococcus tauri is a unicellular species of marine green alga about 0.8 micrometres in diameter, the smallest known free living, non symbiotic eukaryote yet described. It has an unusually simple internal structure and one of the most compact genomes known among eukaryotes, which has made it a widely used model organism for studying the minimal requirements of a eukaryotic cell.
