Coenobita spinosus is one of the terrestrial hermit crab species found across the Indo-Pacific, including Polynesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian islands, the Mariana Islands, the northern coast of Australia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, and Henderson Island in the Pitcairn group. It lives in forests and wetlands as well as beaches and lagoons, and is distinguished from other hermit crabs by unusually long, hair covered spines on its legs. On Henderson Island, populations have been documented using plastic debris in place of shells.
