Common cockle, Cerastoderma edule, is an edible saltwater clam of the family Cardiidae, the cockles, found in coastal waters from Iceland south along the coasts of Europe to as far south as Senegal in western Africa. Its ribbed, oval shell, colored white, yellowish or brown, can reach about six centimeters across, and the species burrows shallowly in sand and mud flats. It is harvested commercially and eaten across much of its range.
