The common periwinkle, or winkle, Littorina littorea, is a species of small whelk or sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc with gills and an operculum in the family Littorinidae. It is a robust intertidal species with shell coloring that ranges from dark to banded, native to the rocky shores of the northeastern Atlantic, including northern Spain, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and Russia, and it has also been introduced to the northwestern Atlantic coast of North America.
