Common Whip Spider

The common whip spider, Damon variegatus, also called the African whip spider, is a species of tailless whip scorpion in the order Amblypygi, endemic to southern Africa, found from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania south to South Africa and Namibia. A 2005 taxonomic revision split off populations west of the Kalahari Desert in Namibia and southern Angola as a separate species, Damon sylviae. Detailed description of its appearance, size and behavior is not covered in the readily available literature beyond its classification and range, a gap this description does not attempt to fill with invented detail.
