Amblypygi is the order of whip spiders, also called tailless whip-scorpions, arachnids that lack silk glands and venom but can inflict a thorn-like puncture with their spiny pedipalps. About 280 species in 18 genera and five families have been identified. They live in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, are entirely nocturnal, and shelter in leaf litter, caves or under bark; their fossil record extends back to the Carboniferous period.
