Coqui

Coqui is a common name for several species of small frogs in the genus Eleutherodactylus, native to Puerto Rico, where more than 20 different species are found, including 13 within El Yunque National Forest. They are named onomatopoeically for the very loud mating call that males of two species, the common coqui and the upland coqui, make at night. Fossil and genetic evidence supports coquis having inhabited Puerto Rico for more than 30 million years, and the coqui is an unofficial national symbol of the island. Other species of the same genus live elsewhere in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
