Crested Gecko

The crested gecko (Correlophus ciliatus), also called the eyelash gecko, is a lizard endemic to the southern province of New Caledonia, including Grande Terre and the Isle of Pines. First described in 1866, it was believed extinct for over a century until its rediscovery in 1994. It is nocturnal and arboreal, living in rainforest canopy and understory, and is named for the hair-like fringes of skin above its eyes; it has no eyelids and cleans its eyes with its tongue. It is omnivorous, eating fruit, nectar, pollen, and insects, and is assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
