Diplodactylidae

Diplodactylidae is a family of geckos in the suborder Gekkota comprising more than 150 species in 25 genera, found in Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. It is the most ecologically diverse gecko family in both Australia and New Caledonia and the only gecko family present in New Zealand. Nearly every species has adhesive toepads formed from microscopic hair-like fibers that grip surfaces through compressed air rather than chemical adhesion, the exception being Lucasium damaeum, which shows evidence of having secondarily lost them. Diplodactylidae is also the only gecko family with viviparous species, found among certain New Caledonian Rhacodactylus and all New Zealand species.
