Dotted hornwort, Anthoceros punctatus, is the type species of the hornwort genus Anthoceros, in the division Anthocerotophyta, a small group of non-vascular land plants named for the long, horn-shaped, spore-producing capsules that rise from a flattened, green, gametophyte thallus. Like other hornworts, it lacks flavonoid pigments entirely, unique among land plants, and its sporophyte carries true stomata and grows continuously from a basal point rather than at its tip, distinguishing hornwort growth from that of mosses.
