The eastern hoolock gibbon, scientifically Hoolock leuconedys, is one of three recognized species of hoolock gibbon, found east of the Chindwin River in Myanmar, including the Mahamyaing Wildlife Sanctuary, and in southwest Yunnan in China; a 2021 study confirmed the species does not occur in India, contrary to earlier assumptions. The hoolock gibbons were formerly classified in the genus Bunopithecus before being placed in their own genus, Hoolock. The eastern hoolock gibbon is listed as Vulnerable under IUCN criteria and protected under CITES Appendix I.
