The eastern lowland gorilla, also called Grauer's gorilla, is a critically endangered subspecies of eastern gorilla found only in the mountainous forests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the largest of all gorilla subspecies, with a jet black coat, and males develop gray backs as they mature into silverbacks; adult males can weigh between 150 and 209 kilograms. A 2021 survey estimated the wild population at about 6,800 individuals, down sharply from roughly 17,000 in the mid 1990s.
