Ensatina is a lungless salamander of the western United States, family Plethodontidae, that breathes entirely through its skin and the lining of its mouth. Its many geographically distinct color forms, which grade into one another around the rim of California's Central Valley and meet without interbreeding at the southern end, make it a textbook example of what biologists call a ring species.
