Entamoeba histolytica is a parasitic amoeba that infects the human intestine, transmitted through contaminated food or water containing its cyst stage, most prevalent in regions with inadequate sanitation. It is the cause of amoebiasis, a disease ranging from no symptoms to severe dysentery, and in some cases the parasite can invade beyond the intestine to form abscesses in the liver, a serious complication distinguishing it from the many harmless amoeba species that also inhabit the human gut.
