The erect-crested penguin is a crested penguin species that breeds mainly on the Bounty and Antipodes Islands, remote subantarctic islands belonging to New Zealand. It takes its name from the stiff, upright yellow crest feathers above each eye, which stand more erect than the drooping crests of related species such as the Fiordland or Snares penguins. It nests in dense colonies on rocky, often steep terrain, laying two eggs of markedly different sizes, of which usually only the larger, second-laid egg produces a surviving chick. Its remote breeding range has made it one of the least studied penguin species, and its population is believed to have declined significantly over recent decades.
