Eurasian tree sparrow

The Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus) is a passerine bird in the sparrow family with a rich chestnut crown and nape and a black patch on each white cheek, with the sexes similarly plumaged. It breeds across much of temperate Eurasia and Southeast Asia and has been introduced elsewhere, including the United States, where it is called the Eurasian or German sparrow to distinguish it from the native American tree sparrow. It builds untidy nests in cavities or abandoned nests of larger birds, typically lays five or six eggs, and feeds mainly on seeds, supplemented by invertebrates during the breeding season; it is assessed as Least Concern despite significant declines in Western Europe from agricultural intensification.
