The fancy rat is the domesticated form of Rattus norvegicus, the brown rat, and is the most commonly kept pet rat. Its name comes from the use of the word fancy to describe a hobby of appreciating, promoting, or breeding pet and domestic animals, as in the wider term animal fancy. Fancy rats descend from wild-caught brown rats that became docile after many generations of breeding.
