Fat-tailed scorpions, genus Androctonus, are found across North Africa and the Middle East and are considered among the most medically significant scorpions in the world, responsible for a large share of serious scorpion stings and deaths in the regions where they occur. They are named for their thick, muscular tail segment, which houses powerful venom glands, and depend heavily on this potent sting to kill prey and defend themselves rather than relying primarily on their pincers as many other scorpions do.
